How cabin pressurisation systems work on mining machinery

Pressurisation, filtration and ventilation are separate functions from cooling — and they fail differently.

The principle

A pressuriser fan draws outside air through a filter and pushes it into the cab, keeping internal pressure slightly above ambient so dust migrates outward rather than inward.

Components

Fresh-air intake, pre-cleaner where fitted, pressurisation filter, fan, ducting, recirculation path and cab seals.

Common failures

Saturated filters, a failed or reversed fan, perished door and window seals, unsealed cable entries and blocked intakes.

Testing

Pressure can be measured with a manometer against the manufacturer's specification. Smoke or airflow checks help locate leak paths around seals and penetrations.
