Refrigerant leak detection on heavy equipment

Why 'top it up and see' is the most expensive approach to a leaking mining machine air conditioner.

Why leaks matter

Refrigerant carries oil to the compressor. A system running low is a system running dry, and repeated regassing converts a small hose repair into a compressor, drier and flush job.

Detection methods

Electronic detectors for accessible joints, UV dye for slow leaks found at the next service, nitrogen pressure testing for open or suspect circuits, and pressure decay testing after repairs.

Typical leak points on mining machines

Hose crimps, bulkhead fittings, condenser tubes damaged by stones, compressor shaft seals and service port valves.

Safety

Refrigerant circuits operate at high pressure and must be recovered by trained technicians with the correct equipment rather than vented or opened on site.
